12 Inspiring Celebrities Who Are Vegan

Vegan Celebrities Ellen Degeneres

EDIT: Some celebrities in this post may not still be vegan. Unfortunately over time, some of these people did not stick with a vegan lifestyle. I am, however, not deleting this post, as there are still some inspiring vegans listed. Feel free to make corrections in the comments below. Thank you!

Confession time: I am one of those people who enjoy catching up on whatever-the-hell celebrities are doing these days. No, not like the Enquirer or any of that crap, but just celebrity news. I know, it’s crap, but it’s a guilty pleasure of mine – especially celebrities who I love! I decided it is only appropriate for me to write about a few of my favorite vegan celebrities. Truth be told, there were a TON that I didn’t realize were vegan!

#1: Ellen DeGeneres.

ellen

All hail this woman. Gah, I love her – from her comedy to her heart. When asked why she went vegan, it’s really plain and simple: “I do it because I love animals.” Heart of gold, Ellen. Heart of gold.

Inspiring Quote: “I personally chose to go vegan because I educated myself on factory farming and cruelty to animals, and I suddenly realized that what was on my plate were living things, with feelings. And I just couldn’t disconnect myself from it any longer.”

#2: Joaquin Phoenix.

joaquin

I saw the movie Signs when I was in 7th grade, and was instantly attracted to him. I may not have known about his stance on animal-cruelty then, but I sure as hell saw something in him! Not only has he been a vegan since the age of 3, he is also the narrator of Earthlings.

Inspiring Quote: “It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.”

#3: Alicia Silverstone.

alicia

At the age of 21, the star of Clueless adopted a vegan lifestyle. Since then, she has written a book and began a blog (The Kind Life). I am a big fan of both! She is truly an inspiring person – beautiful inside and out!

Inspiring Quote: “I can’t think of anything better in the world to be but a vegan.”

#4: Paul McCartney.

paul

When the Beatles’ frontman is asked why he became vegan, he tells the story of one of his own lambs. Both him and his wife were enjoying a meat dinner outdoors, and while looking out at the field, he spotted the lamb. He looked down at his plate, and made the connection.

Inspiring Quote: “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, we’d all be vegetarian.”

#5: Mayim Bialik.

mayim

My faaavorite Big Bang Theory star! Mayim grew up vegetarian and made the big switch when she was 19. Just this year, she released a vegan cookbook, Mayim’s Vegan Table.

Inspiring Quote: “I show my love for animals by not eating them or participating in any business that profits directly from their exploitation or – if that word irks you – their “use.” You may show your love for animals by eating them. You may love animals, but only “intelligent” ones. You may draw the line anywhere you gosh darn please, but for me, I couldn’t draw it anymore so I just gave up the line. I threw out the line.”

#6: Woody Harrelson.

woody

The Hunger Games & True Detective star was dealing with severe acne at age 24 when a girl on the bus told him that quitting dairy would help. He took her advice, and the acne went away. He’s been a vegan for over 20 years!

Inspiring Quote: “Raw food is the best way to have the cleanest energy. We take so much care about what kind of fuel we put in our car, what kind of oil. We care about that more than the fuel that we’re putting in our bodies. It’s cleaner burning fuel.”

#7: Ellen Page.

ellenpage

PETA named Ellen Page the sexiest vegan just this year. I’d have to agree. Not only is Ellen gorgeous, but also kind, brave, intelligent, and compassionate. I totally want to be best friends with this girl.

Inspiring Quote: “Why are vegans made fun of while the inhumane factory farming process regards animals and the natural world merely as commodities to be exploited for profit?”

#8: Olivia Wilde.

olivia

Let me start by saying this girl is one of my girl crushes – hilarious, beautiful, vegan. Need I say more? Olivia was a vegetarian since the age of 12, and finally made the big change when a friend helped support her. Which friend? Alicia Silverstone, of course!

Inspiring Quote: “[Being vegan] is not always easy and accessible, but it’s a way of life and makes me as a person feel really good and physically look better. My skin was better, energy was better.”

#9: Mark Hoppus.

mark

As a huge blink-182 fan, I follow Mark Hoppus on Twitter. The bass player announced his plans to go vegan, and has stuck with it. How do we know? Well, we take his constant Twitter-word for it. He continues to tweet “still vegan.”

Inspiring Quote: “It’s been months since an animal has had to die so that I could eat a meal and I feel smug as shit about it to be honest.”

#10: Natalie Portman.

natalie

Natalie is an on/off vegan. She was not vegan during her pregnancy a couple years back, but has since then picked it back up. She’s still an inspiration – just take a look at her words below.

Inspiring Quote: “Everyone has to find what is right for them, and it is different for everyone. Eating for me is how you proclaim your beliefs three times a day. That is why all religions have rules about eating. Three times a day, I remind myself that I value life and do not want to cause pain to or kill other living beings. That is why I eat the way I do.”

#11: Bill Clinton.

bill

Former President Bill Clinton adopted a vegan lifestyle in 2010 for health reasons. Since then, he has lost over 20 lbs. Go Bill!

Inspiring Quote: “All my blood tests are good, and my vital signs are good, and I feel good, and I also have, believe it or not, more energy.”

#12: Johnny Depp.

johnny

Oh Johnny, I would never forget you. The shy actor has recently gone vegan. There is not much more that we know, because, well… he is a quiet, strange man. I like strange, though… a lot. Who doesn’t love Johnny?

Inspiring Quote: “If you don’t like seeing pictures of violence towards animals being posted, you need to help stop the violence, not the pictures.”

    1. You’re so welcome! I do, too… it makes me so happy to hear about vegan celebs doing great things! <3

      1. i like it because sometimes even people i love pick on me for my choices and tell me that i’m being silly. i can be like “well hey, you LOVE ellen and she’s vegan!” #goteam

      2. LOL yes! All the cool kids are vegan ;)

  1. Fabulous post, it’s great to remind people of all the big names who are living a compassionate lifestyle, because so many people look up to them.

I didn’t know Johnny Depp went vegan, and I didn’t think that man could be any hotter, but now apparently he can!

Also I didn’t know about Mark Hoppus – I remember reading ages ago that Travis Barker is vegan, so maybe he had a hand in Mark’s conversion!

    1. Sian – I agree! Oh man… apparently Johnny went vegan because of Amber Heard. I hope he sticks with it!! Also, ahhh Mark is my man!! He has been tweeting about it like crazy… and again, hoping he sticks with it, too! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t tweet him about it a few times :-D <3

      1. Ha! Ok I’m totally gonna start following Mark on Twitter. He’s actually hilairous :D

  2. I love the quotes about transparency. If we all saw what was going on all the time in those slaughterhouses then we WOULD all be vegan, most likely. Random but I just stopped eating dairy this past Monday in an experiment to see if it would help my acne – I’ll keep ya posted on what happens!

    1. I do, too! It rings so much truth… people just need to open their eyes and see.

Yes, please keep us posted! When I became vegan, my skin cleared up like crazy. I didn’t have bad acne, but people would always say “wow, you’re skin!” So I have faith that you will see a difference :) xx

  3. Great article! You make being a vegan fun and appealing to all those out there who have not yet been converted – great to see your inspiration!

    1. Aw, thank you so much for your kind words! We aim to do that, so happy it is coming off that way :) <3

  4. Vegan-Style!!! The best Style ever. The Science of Future will be Vegan. It’s the only Part of Live who will survive the Problems witch will come in our Future. The Shadow is so deep ,danger and clear…….go vegan be strong and keep Love as surest Goal in your Lifetime

    1. The reason I came across this post is because I’ve just seen Mr.Depp advertising the new Dior fragrance & immediately thought ‘I’m sure he’s vegan but not sure if Dior don’t test on animals (I’m yet to research this) which would make it all a little hypocritical. Don’t get me wrong anyone that takes steps to end any animal cruelty has my support & thanks but no one can call themselves a vegan if they are profiting from anything that involves cruelty. (off to research Dior’s stance on animal testing)

      1. Snap! That’s exactly what brought me here. . . According to http://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/companies-that-test-on-animals/ Dior are one of the companies that test on animals – however, I recall Dior had previously claimed to be a cruelty free brand, therefore I don’t feel that J. Depp has a hypocritical stance, but perhaps (more likely) has been ‘mislead’ – just as ethical shoppers where also duped.

According to a prominent Vegan Activist You Tuber, the same cannot be said for Ellen DeGeneres, as it seems her fashion line (shoes) includes Leather! (Source: Vegan Gains You Tube)

Ellen Degeneres Facing Backlash Over New Leather Shoe Line
sorry, this post about 12 vegan… is really going to be a very bad joke…

      2. Yeah, it’s too bad that people don’t stick with it. It makes posts from the past pretty useless!

      3. i think, you can keep this post – but change the headline & edit the sections with the real facts…

  10. Don’t forget about atleast two big names wich is Beyonce and Miley Cyrus.

    1. Thanks for adding, Joel! They would have definitely made the cut if I wrote this post more recently ;)

    2. Beyonce isn’t a vegan! She wears fur!

  11. you forgot jared leto!

  12. I have researched and unfortunately Dior do test on animals :(

    1. Ugh, that is horrible news. Thanks for looking into this, Victoria. Like you mentioned, I also am happy to hear people making any strides that they can, but it is definitely a let down when you find out something like this!

  13. Exactly when you research everything virtually everything humans do involves some kind of cruelty or exploitation to animals. Sometimes you have to really dig for the facts but pound to a penny you’ll find something re; cruelty connected to almost everything. Going to take a long time to undo all this damage & again I say well done to anyone that takes steps but don’t claim to be vegan when you aren’t. I call myself a vegetarian even though I follow a vegan diet because I can’t be 100% sure that everything I wear, do or eat doesn’t involve cruelty as much as I try.

  14. Not all the people you listed are vegan. Paul McCartney is a vegetarian, so is Ellen page.

Ellen Degeneres sells suede and leather shoes through her footwear line. You will find stories claiming that she stopped, but they only changed the venues through which those shoes are sold.

They all participate in cruelty to animals in one form or another. Let’s hope they change and let’s not pretend they are vegan when they are not.
