Homemade Holiday Scents

Homemade Scents - The Friendly Fig

My mother is Mrs. Claus. No joke. I can’t tell you what a shit-tastic week this was, but she comes out smiling, and with a tray full of these things:

My first question was “What are those lovely little treasures?” when it should have been “How do you find the time, miracle woman?” Here’s the scoop.

They’re natural, holiday home scents (and favors for every guest at her house on Christmas Eve. You comin’?). Air fresheners that won’t make you cough. Beautiful for the hostess, Secret Santa, or your damn self.

Mama Bear used orange wedges, 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary, 2 tsp. vanilla extract, and vanilla bean. Then she immersed it all in water. The scents take a couple of days to infuse, then they’re ready to go. Pour the whole thing into a small pot on the stovetop and simmer on super low heat, adding more water as it evaporates.

Having company on Xmas Eve AND Xmas Day? You beast! Stick the scented water in the fridge in between uses. You can use it more than once, as long as it’s within 2-3 days.

Here, have some more scent-spiration:

  • Lime, thyme, mint and vanilla
  • Orange, ginger and almond extract
  • Orange, cinnamon sticks and allspice
  • Whatever nice smelling ingredients you already have on hand

Merry Christmas! (Maybe you should ask Santa for a mom as boss as mine.)
