Hey there, veg-head. Whether you eat vegan, vegetarian, plant-based… whatever the hell you label it, I can assure you that we’ve shared a number of #awkwardturtles. It’s just inevitable. So this week, I’d like to point out a few of my favorites. You really can’t help but just laugh!
#1: “I’m vegan.”
Because, let’s just get the obvious one out of the way.
#2: You overhear a family member at a party respond “No, I don’t eat vegan,” after someone mentions that you made a vegan dessert.
Gee, thanks. Just cause it’s vegan? But… but… it’s cake.
#3: When you tell the barista soy milk but watch as she froths your whole milk latte.
Seriously? Just write it on the cup for all I care – JUST DON’T MAKE ME SICK.
#4: “So you really only get your protein from beans then,” says Grandpa.
No.
#5: “The Bible tells us to eat meat, though.”
Oh, yikes. I’m exiting this conversation.
#6: When someone tells a vegan joke that has been told a million times before.
… and FYI, it’s not really funny.
#7: When a restaurant tells you that they will “make something special” and it’s just a pile of sautéed veggies.
I mean, it’s fine. Could I at least get some rice with this?
#8: When another vegan criticizes you for something crazy, like the fact that you watch The Walking Dead.
Uh, what? Last I checked, the Walking Dead was a fictional television series. Also, if we’re being nit-picky, aren’t vegans supposed to be kind, or something?
#9: “I could never go vegan.”
….k.
#10: “Sorry! Oh sorry, you can’t have this. Do you mind if I eat it in front of you?”
Oh my gosh, yes, go ahead. Please eat something. YOU’RE MAKING THIS WEIRD.

I’m rarely able to relate to these lists.
Where do you guys live and how do you afford to eat at restaurants?
When people find out I’m vegan, they either say nothing or they say something positive (eg, “so that’s why you’ve got so much energy” or “is that why you’ve never missed work, cuz you don’t get sick?”)
Lucky you, Matt! I come from a huge Italian family – and luckily, my mom is vegan, but some of my relatives just do not get it. I have to laugh at it… they mean well, but it is just one of those things!
LOL. How about ‘what are you allowed to eat’? Allowed? It’s not like you can lose your vegan membership card if you drink coffee or something….

#4 – lol Story of my life. Just yesterday I was called crazy because I don’t eat real butter. I just replied with “no” lol
