Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month: 10 WTF Facts

Today kicks off a cause that is dear to my heart: Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month. Each year, the ASPCA urges supporters across the country to “Go Orange for Animals.” Organize a fundraiser, become an animal activist, write an informational blog post, wear orange, spread the word on social media… there are a number of ways to get involved this month and show your support. Here at The Friendly Fig, I’m rockin’ my orange and here to open your fucking eyes. Eye-opening facts are inside the post. It’s time to take off your blinders.

#1: Did you know that 500,000 animals die annually for cosmetics animal testing?

#2: Each year, the international fur trade accounts for the killing of over 2 million cats and dogs. That’s right. Domestic animals.

#3: BOYCOTT THE CIRCUS. Trainers use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks and other painful tools of the trade to force animals to perform – including the elephants and lions. Let them be free.

#4: DON’T SUPPORT PUPPY MILLS! They are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations that put greater priority on profits than the health of the pups. Many will die of illness before all else, due to the conditions that they are kept in.

#5: Only ugly people wear fur coats. According to statistics, over 18 foxes are killed to make ONE fur coat. ONE mink coat? OVER 55 MINKS ARE KILLED.

#6: “Over 100 million animals – mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, birds, and more – are killed in US laboratories for chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing every year.”

#7: Thousands of grey hounds are killed each year. Do you know why? Because they are not fast enough to run in ridiculous races. WTF??????

#8: SeaWorld confines orcas to tanks that are the equivalent to the size of a bathtub for an animal who swims over 100 miles a day in the wild. Due to poor conditions and care, orcas in captivity have a median lifespan of 9 years old. Orcas in the wild have an average life expectancy of 30 to 50 years. A male’s maximum life span is 60 to 70 years, and for females? 80 to more than 100 years. Stunted? Yeah, I’d say.

#9: Captive pigs are more often than not subjected to cruel treatment such as jabbing with pins, beating with metal rods, and spray-painted with obscenities. You’d probably throw up if you saw what goes on behind closed doors.

#10: Bullfighting is a sporting activity in which bulls are mercilessly abused and killed with spikes, daggers and spears. Seriously… a sporting activity. MINDLESS.

Animal cruelty is a fucking problem, people. From farm to exotic to domestic – it happens across the board. Since when are humans the superior beings? Put an end to animal suffering. Join us in spreading the word this month. Go orange, and help improve the lives of animals all over the globe. xx Bianca
