11 Baby Items to Buy While Thrifting

11 Baby Items to Buy While Thrifting

Another thrifting post! I can’t stop myself. A little over a month ago, there was a huuuuge consignment sale just 7 minutes from us. I found out that this happens twice a year (April and September) and it’s basically my new favorite thing to look forward to. Everything from clothes to toys to gear… on and on and on. I’ll admit – some things are questionable. I’m a cautious thrifter and only gravitate towards certain items (things that can be easily washed). But I made out well, and I’ll be visiting twice every year from here on out!

The volunteers were so sweet and the atmosphere was pleasant… prices low, clothes clean, and everything was just clean in general. I was so impressed.

And as usual the best part – save a little money, recycle beautiful items that have been gently used, and donate when you are done. I love it.

So, here are some of the items I recommend grabbing. These items are easy to wash, sterilize, and make your own. Once you do that, you’ll breathe new life into them and will forget you even bought secondhand!

#1: Boppy Pillow + Covers

I was most excited about these boppy covers I grabbed. They were $2 each. TWO DOLLARS. I already had the pillow passed down from my friend (thanks, Lauren!) so a boppy, cover, and one extra cover cost me a grand total of $4. Just toss everything into your washer machine and it’s good as new.

#2: Clothes

The infant clothes bin at this place was literally marked $1 per item. Yup, all of these items above cost $1 each. Even those adorable little polka-dotted jeans (which I also have a pair of… twinning). They also had rows and rows of racks (all different ages) that cost anywhere between $2-$8 (I’ll share a pic below). I can’t wait to go in September and find a sweet Halloween or Christmas outfit (it’s almost free!)

#3: Hangers

I had baby hangers on my own registry but took those suckers off. They had a huge bin of all different colors and sizes. I grabbed 35 hangers for $6! Got home – filled up the sink with some bleach, water, and soap. Soaked for 10-15 minutes, dried in shower… done.

#4: Books

They had soooo many books! Books for all ages and reading levels. I could have gotten lost in this section, but I did my best to wait until my shower (I know there will be lots of books bought). I had to buy Corduroy… because… love. And it was $2 – it looked like it never been cracked open!

#5: Swaddles

Swaddles get a little pricey sometimes, so why not buy hand-me-down? Some looked a little worn, but most of them were barely used. For something you won’t use for more than a few months, grab secondhand and give them a good inspection and wash and you’re good to go.

#6: Dishwasher Inserts

I was really excited about these because I knew I wanted something to keep all those small bottle parts in check – but they usually cost maybe $10 or so? It’s not crazy expensive but buying a couple of these secondhand cost me… $2 and $2.50 each. Run them through the dishwasher and you’re good to go.

#7: Bowls, Plates, Bottles, etc.

Same situation as the dishwasher insert, bowls, plates, and bottles are so easy to run through a couple cycles before using. They had a ton and they cost anywhere between $2-$10.

#8: Nursing + Carrier Covers

So many pretty prints and they were very cheap/barely used. Run through the laundry and there you have it.

#9: Bumbo Seat

I am actually not a huge fan of these and do not plan on registering or buying, but if you are…. try to find one gently used. They can run upwards $50 and baby outgrows them so quickly! A good scrub down is all it takes and it’ll be looking good as new.

#10: Sheets

Because laundry is your friend, and you’ll be going through lots of sheets… right? I just check to make sure the material is soft and without stains.

#11: Tub

There were a ton of tubs – all different styles and size. They ran between $8-$20. Again, easy to bleach and scrub down.

I was so impressed with this whole consignment sale. If you are local, I highly recommend making it a priority when it comes back in September! There’s no telling what you’ll find. It runs for a couple days, and on the last day, most items were 50% off. They also restock overnight, so it is totally worth going back a couple times!

So, just another way I’m trying to save some money over here to prepare for our little girl to get here. Yes, registering for new items and having friends and family be so gracious and spoil you to death is nice… it’s amazing how kind and supportive your circle is. But… some things are just better when thrifted. I’m a firm believer.

Anyone else? xx bianca

  1. Those Boppy covers are adorable!! (As you well know haha) we had so much newborn stuff but I’ll definitely be checking out this sale in the fall!!

    1. Thank you for providing the boppy!! But yes, we should definitely go together! I will need to get out of the house, I’m sure ;) xx

  2. As a mother of five (nursed all five) I HIGHLY recommend the boppy. Also two can’t live without items: A nursing foot stool (raises and angles your legs so nursing is far more comfortable) and a metal framed baby backpack to be used when your baby is a little older. We used a Kelty pathfinder kid carrier. Put the backpack on your registry and a few families can share the expense. So excited for you, best wishes :)

    1. Hi Jan! God bless you – five kids! Thanks for the tips. I am definitely going to look into both items now. I am also very excited to use the boppy, and even more excited with how much money I saved by choosing secondhand. Loved hearing from you. xx bianca
