You’re starting your first Animal Crossing island (or a new one!) and excited for endless possibilities. You wonder which airport color you’ll get, what your native fruit will be, or who you’ll be spending the early days with. While some players care about airport color, island map, or native fruit the most, many of us are concerned with our starting villagers.
Starting villagers are the two villagers who are already on your island when you arrive. The three of you will be going through the early first days together, which is very exciting! You may be hoping for a specific villager or maybe you are not familiar and are wondering who the best are. Today, we’re going to look at the most popular and well-loved starters.
Something to note beforehand is that your two starting villagers are always going to be a sisterly villager and a jock villager. As the game progresses, you will add three more starters (who will not have their usual interiors) and these three will be a lazy villager, a peppy villager, and a normal villager. But today, we are going to focus the two very first starters! These are often the ones that people feel most attached to and will fondly look back and say “she/he was my starter and has been with me since day 1!” Aw. The feels.
Best Sisterly Starters
Each personality in Animal Crossing has either a Subtype A and Subtype B personality. You can learn more about villagers subtypes here. Subtype A generally talk about flowers/babysitting/their past while Subtype B are more into fitness and sports. There are only a few Bs. I will make a note of each!
#1: Pashmina
Pashmina is such a beautiful warm color and I love her winged eyeliner. She really does feel like the cool older sister who will take you under her wing. Her favorite colors are red and rainbow. She has the music hobby, which means she will randomly sing around the island and it is adorable. She is often talking about flowers and gardening. Personally, she is a forever villager on my island.
Her birthday is December 26th and she has a Subtype A personality.
#2: Deirdre
I think Deirdre is one of the most underrated villagers in the game. Her natural coloring and design is perfect for players who like villagers who look like what they are. She wears the yellow flower sweater and has the most beautiful autumnal home, which is great if fall and autumn is your favorite season. Her favorite color is orange and her hobby is play. When she zooms around the island, it is absolutely precious.
Her birthday is May 4th and she has a Subtype A personality.
#3: Agnes
She has a No-BS vibe
My girl Agnes has the most top tier RBF and a No-BS attitude about her. She’s effortlessly cool and deep down, she cares very deeply about you and will protect you at all costs. I love that she is the only black pig villager in the game. Her favorite colors are pink and white and she has the play hobby.
Her birthday is April 21st and she has a Subtype A personality.
#4: Cherry
This is your ride-or-die villager. The most unique, confident, and edgy sis that you need in your life. Cherry isn’t afraid to be who she is and that makes her an amazing choice. Who wouldn’t want that kind of energy on their island? Her favorite colors are purple and black and she has the music hobby. She’s totally rock ‘n roll.
Her birthday is May 11th and she has a Subtype A personality.
#5: Katt
Katt and her badass fangs. Her beautiful coloring and markings. Getting a cat villager as your starter is really good luck because they tend to be rare villagers to find on villager hunts. If your starter is cat, consider yourself very lucky! Her favorite colors are purple and black and she has the music hobby.
Her birthday is April 27th and she has a Subtype A personality.
#6: Fuchsia
The most vibrant and rad big sister villager you need in your life. Fuschia is as chic as they come and feels a bit rock ‘n roll, right? She is a major baddie with a heart of gold. I love the piercings on her ears – it’s a nice touch. Naturally, her favorite color is pink and she has the music hobby.
Her birthday is September 19th and she has a Subtype A personality.
#7: Hazel
You either love her or hate her. But if I hear any hate, I am going to be vocal about it. Hazel is so freaking cute with her unique and endearing unibrow. It bothers some people, but I don’t see why. Hazel gives off a sporty no-nonsense vibe, though she has the Subtype A personality. Her favorite colors are red and yellow and she has the play hobby. Please do not sleep on this squirrel villager. She is a riot to have around.
Her birthday is August 30th and she has a Subtype A personality.
#8: Reneigh
Reneigh was introduced in New Horizons and quickly became one of the best sisterly villagers. Her mane is absolutely stunning (and is that an undercut I spy?) Like Fuschia, she has silver ear piercings and I think she rocks it. Her favorite colors are black and purple and she has the play hobby.
Her birthday is June 4th and she has a Subtype A personality.
#9: Faith
Faith has been a long-time favorite with her bold, tropical design and adorable flower accessory. She is very cutesy and I think popular with younger players, in particular. Her favorite colors are red and white and she has the music hobby.
Her birthday is March 21st and she has a Subtype B personality.
#10: Muffy
Muffy is your goth queen. If this is your aesthetic and vibe, you will have truly lucked out with Muffy! She is completely perfect for witchy islands! If that is your plan, you will want to roll for her. Her favorite colors are black and purple and she has the music hobby.
Her birthday is February 14th and she has a Subtype A personality.

Best Jock Starters
Jocks also have a Subtype A or B personality – you can read more about what that means here. But basically, subtype A villagers are more play-based while subtype B tend to really lay on the fitness chat thick. But don’t be confused by it… they all love talking about exercise and sports.
#1: Bill
I am going to kick off the jocks with one of my favorite villagers of all time, which is Bill. Bill is the world’s cutest duck who is constantly talking about his swole muscles and that makes me giggle because… Bill… look at you. I admire the confidence. He looks amazing in sweaters, so be sure to gift him a bunch. I am obsessed with his play hobby… watching him zoomie around the island is one of the highlights of the game for me. I will never stop raving about this little dude. His favorite colors are blue and purple and he looks unbelievable in an aran knit cardigan and pair of rimmed glasses.
His birthday is February 1st and he has a Subtype A personality.
#2: Teddy
Teddy is the classic teddy bear villager that a lot of people love, especially if you are designing a cottagecore or forestcore island. He feels very warm and cozy. His favorite colors are yellow and orange and he has the fitness hobby.
His birthday is September 16th and he has a Subtype B personality.
#3: Rudy
Fun fact: Rudy was my very first starter when I began my New Horizons journey! He holds a special place in my heart! If you end up with Rudy as your starter, you should feel lucky because cat villagers are often considered rare. His favorite colors are yellow and beige and he has the play hobby. It is absolutely adorable when he zoomies ’round and ’round.
His birthday is December 20th and he has a Subtype A personality.
#4: Poncho
Poncho is such a cute little blue bear. He reminds me of a blueberry and works so nicely on a summer or coastal island. I think he is very underrated!! His catchphrase is “li’l bear,” which is also just as adorable. He is very energetic and he has the fitness hobby. His favorite colors are orange and yellow.
His birthday is January 2nd and he has a Subtype B personality.
#5: Genji
Does he not remind you of the Bao bun in Disney’s Pixar short “Bao” or what? He is totally underrated and so adorable. For having such a serious frown, he is awfully cheerful when he starts talking and gives you the cutest double-wave. His favorite colors are green and purple and he has the fitness hobby.
His birthday is January 21st and he has a Subtype B personality.
#6: Kid Cat
Did you know that kid cat is a really popular villager? This surprised me! I think players really dig the unique superhero/helmet design and he is a cat villager, so automatic points for that. His favorite color is red and he has the fitness hobby.
His birthday is August 1st and he has a Subtype B personality.
#7: Iggly
Another fan favorite, Iggly feels like a baby penguin. He has really nice soft colors and an adorable expression on his face. If you are aiming for a wintery island theme, you will want to roll for him! His favorite colors are blue and red and he has the fitness hobby.
His birthday is November 2nd and he has a Subtype B personality.
#8: Dom
Dom is happiness in villager form. He has the cutest starry eyes and just looks like he wants to give hugs to everyone. For a newer villager, his popularity rose very quickly. His favorite colors are red and colorful and he has the play hobby, which suits him perfectly. Great addition to the game.
His birthday is March 18th and he has a Subtype A personality.
#9: Bam
If you are starting with a deer villager, I personally think you’ve won the lottery. I think the deer villagers are some of the cutest in game and Bam is no exception. He has a really sporty vibe, if that is your thing. His favorite colors are green and brown and he has the play hobby.
His birthday is November 7th and he has a Subtype A personality.
#10: Roald
Another cute penguin that has been an OG favorite for a very long time! If you start with Roald, you are extremely lucky. He is perfect for wintercore and cozy islands. His favorite colors are red and yellow and he has the fitness hobby.
His birthday is January 5th and he has a Subtype B personality.
