Hi friends!
Popping in to share a peek at our read aloud choices for 2023-2024. If you’ve been here a while or follow along on Instagram, you know that reading aloud is the backbone of our homeschool and family culture, really. We read read read and read some more. Picture books, chapter books, non-fiction, early readers, whatever. We enjoy a wide range of literature from the comfort of our couch or bed and wouldn’t have it any other way. I have been working on their habit of attention for a while now and I can say that my oldest (6) is full-steam ahead ready for longer chapter books. While she loves picture books always, she gets particularly excited when we start chapter books now. My youngest (almost 4) is still not 100% there, but she will hangout next to us while playing or crafting.
My daughter’s two current favorites are the Sophie Mouse series and the Flamingo Hotel series. We have been working our way through both for a bit now. What I love about these books is that there are enough pictures in between that have helped build her habit of attention over time. These are great for kids who are just getting started with listening to chapter books. What she loves about them is that they are focused on animals (her favorite kind of stories always feature animals as the main character, like a lot of children!) Sophie Mouse in particular is wonderful because it is nature-focused with a cast of kind-hearted characters. They have great character traits (respect, good manners, thoughtfulness, etc.) and perfect for kids who love the outdoors and art (Sophie is a painter!) They are very relatable for my daughter.
Aside from these two standouts, we are also adding the following to our list for the 2023-2024 year. I chose a blend of classic lit and some new/modern series to keep things fresh. We may or may not get to all of them, but it is nice to have a jumping off point. Let me know if you and your kids have read and enjoyed any of the below.
