We may be a month or so out from daylight savings, but the evenings are already growing darker. I’ll be honest and say that I am in the minority of those who really enjoy this time. Yes, the darkness does linger a little too long into the New Year but at this specific time of year, I open my arms to slowing down. I know a lot of people have trouble with this shift so I am making it my mission to not change your mind completely (I would fail, I am sure) but bring a few mindset shifts that may make it a bit more palatable. There are reasons why this shift is beneficial and you can certainly find glimmers of joy in the darkness.
Here are 20 things to consider…
~ Consider this time a personal reset button where you create slower rituals for yourself.
~ It’s an invitation to linger in bed! Enjoy the extra rest for your body by going to bed earlier.
~ There is less pressure to do more, as the earlier sunset beckons us indoors to pause, gather, and reflect. It’s not a time to go-go-go, but a time to take a breath and sink into rest.
~ Twinkle lights and candles add a little magic to your dark evenings. Invest in them!
~ Golden hour walks are not only beautiful, but invigorating in the crisp temps.
~ You get to curl up with a good book earlier than ever.
~ It’s an excuse for more blankets, pillow, candles, and linens – all the comforts to make your bedroom or living room inviting!
~ You can sip on hot chocolate after dark, which feels a little luxurious.
~ Speaking of luxury… evening baths by candlelight sounds amazing, right?
~ Take a moment to spend time with the moon. Looking up at the moon in the stillness of the evening can make everything else in life (re: worries and responsibilies) feel pretty insignificant. And on the same note…
~ Spend a little extra time under the stars. Grab a blanket and your warm beverage and let the stars be your companion.
~ If you’re lucky, you can catch the sunset while you make dinner. This is one of my favorite parts of dark nights. Cold weather sunsets are like a warm hug and a kiss in the dark.
~ Enjoy your kids in their footed pajamas that much more often. I love footie pj szn.
~ Enjoy some milky peppermint tea and dark chocolate while you watch your favorite comfort show.
~ The mornings will be easier to rise you wake up with daylight and it’s better for your circadian rhythm.
~ Practice gratitude that you can experience the joy of staying in. Not everyone has the comfort of home.
~ Spend quality time doing indoor hobbies with loved ones like board games, movies, and puzzles.
~ Pop outside and listen to the world go quiet, sans the song of crickets. There’s nothing more peaceful.
~ There’s something magical when you walk or drive through the neighborhood and see windows lit up in the darkness. It’s almost like a storybook. Just something small to notice and appreciate.
~ Time is a gift during fall daylight savings – cherish it, stretch it, and let the long night be yours.
