Acai bowls remind me of sunshine and warm weather. Probably because I always have the best ones when visiting Delray. And probably because they are always better when eaten outside in the sun.
The thing is, having an acai bowl when out and about can be pretty expensive – sometimes costing $10 or more. So why not make your own, right? I love buying my own acai packets (Trader Joe’s brand are affordable) and making from my own kitchen.
The beauty of these bowls is that there really isn’t a wrong way to make it, but I definitely have my preferences. Basically for me, I always need granola and a ton of fruity toppings. Mango is a must for me, too. It goes so well with the base. I make sure I have all of these things beforehand. Then assembly is real easy. I know there are a bunch of different recipes out there (and endless toppings), but I wanted to share my favorite way to enjoy. This is my perfect acai bowl.
SMOOTHIE BASE RECIPE
The key to the perfect acai bowl is to use as little liquid as possible and use all frozen fruit for the base. If you prefer it more watery, then go for it, but I love mine to be like a thick ice-cream consistency. So the below may seem like not enough liquid, but it goes a long way if you have a high-powered blender. If not, just stop and mash along the way (or add a bit more liquid if necessary!)
I also love to thicken it up with more than just an acai packet. You’ll see how below.
For smoothie base, you will need:
- 1 packet acai (I use Trader Joe’s brand)
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1/4 cup almond milk
Blend together and run until thick and smooth.
TOPPINGS
- 1/2 cup granola (I love Cascadian Farms)
- Shredded coconut flakes
- Mango chunks
- Blueberries
- Orange slices
- Frozen raspberries
Add toppings and dig in.
My choice toppings are above, but there are so many ways to top a bowl. Some ideas: cacao nibs, strawberries, kiwi, chia seeds, blackberries, banana slices, goji berries
What’s your favorite way to make an acai bowl? I’ve heard that frozen mango is a great addition to the base, but have yet to try it. But you know my love for mango, so that may end up being my favorite real fast. xx bianca
