Our Favorite Autumn Picture Books

Picture Books for Your Autumn Bookshelf

Good morning, friends!

I’ll just say it: children’s picture books are my weakness. The messaging, the imagination, the illustrations… a good children’s book is an absolute masterpiece. I regularly add to our girls’ collection (thank god for bargain sites like Book Outlet). And since autumn is my very favorite season, you can imagine how much I love books surrounding it. Books about pumpkins, leaves, and not-so-scary monsters.

Halloween isn’t my favorite holiday, so there aren’t too many spooky books below, but I think you’ll appreciate what I’ve chosen for our shelf below.

Just a note – I usually buy all of our books from Book Outlet because it is so much more inexpensive than Amazon. Trust me, no hate against Amazon, but when books are 40-50% cheaper… you gotta go with the deal. If you haven’t browsed Book Outlet, I highly recommend!

The ONLY downside is having patience because they don’t always have what you want in stock. I will also include Amazon links below in case you want to add to your wish list or purchase directly from there if you don’t feel like waiting on Book Outlet.

NOTE: This post contains affiliate links, which means that I’ll receive a commission if you purchase from this link. This will not change or increase the cost of your purchase. This extra income provides for my family and keeps The Friendly Fig running strong.

1. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves

Fletcher is the cutest curious Fox who is very intrigued by the leaves falling around him.

2. Where the Wild Things Are

My favorite picture book of all time. It is the first book I bought Willow years ago and wrote in.

3. The Little Yellow Leaf

A story of a little leaf holding onto a branch too tightly, not quite ready to let go and fall. This is such a sweet book with gorgeous illustrations.

4. Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn

A great way to introduce the changing of season to your kids. We read this a lot last year and I expect to do the same again this year.

5. Leaf Man

A very simple story of where the leaves blow with stunning collages.

6. Pumpkin Jack

We love Pumpkin Jack! Willow calls all pumpkins “Pumpkin Jack” now. This story captures the lifecycle of a pumpkin.

7. Tidy

Pete the badger is obsessed with being neat – too neat, in fact. He tidies up pretty much everything and learns a good lesson along the way.

8. Bear’s Scare

Bear looks for a spider guest in his home but soon finds that maybe the little spider isn’t so bad after all. It’s a sweet story without being spooky.

9. Hedgehugs Autumn Hide-and-Squeak

Two little hedgehogs play hide-and-seek with a squeaky bat in autumn. It is as charming as it sounds.

10. Apples and Pumpkins

Apples and pumpkins reminds us of the traditions that will go on and on and on. There is nothing like apple or pumpkin picking in the fall.

11. The Fierce Yellow Pumpkin

We are fans of any book that features a pumpkin! In this story, a yellow pumpkin dreams to grow up fierce and frightening. Perfect for Halloween.

12. Slinky Malinki

What would October be without a spooky black cat causing mischief in the neighborhood? Slinky Malinki is our kind of kitty.

13. Pick a Pumpkin

The illustrations in this book are just divine. Picking the perfectly imperfect pumpkin is the best part of autumn and this books captures that delight.

14. Cats’ Night Out

Kitties & music – what’s not to love? Love the rhyming in this one. It’s really fun to read.

15. Bonaparte Falls Apart

The little monsters in this book are just spooky enough for toddlers. It’s very sweet and funny for little ones!

16. Sweep

This book deals with some big feelings but the illustrations scream fall and will make you want to go play in the leaves.
