I know that I can do little to control what is happening in the world and if I sat and doom-scrolled and tried to make sense of it, I wouldn’t be in such a nice place. Instead, I focus on the things that I can directly control and that is where whimsy comes in.

I can choose to be silly and find magic in little things in my daily life. These things make me ME and they are helpful in staying grounded and positive in a world that doesn’t always feel that way. You feel me? Can you relate?

Quirky & Whimsical Habits

Name inanimate objects. Name your car. Name your plants. Name all the things, really. Which brings me to…

Personify inanimate objects. Once upon a time I had a car who I called Reggie. All my close friends knew who Reggie was.

Chat with your pets (or plant babies). I hope we are all talking to our pets like they can understand us. Talking to animals? Even those who are not our pets, like the ducks in the local park? Always whimsical.

Write little notes to yourself and stick them in random places. Maybe you’ll stumble upon one in a few weeks and make yourself smile! Mantras are a great thing to start with or maybe it’s a quote from your favorite comedy for a quick laugh.

Whimsy In Your Home & Environment

Plant bulbs in the autumn to have something beautiful in the spring. This is a small investment but if you buy perennials like tulips, daffodils, or hyacinths, they will come back year after year.

Add a window birdfeeder to your home and welcome new friends. Bonus points if you chat with them once they arrive.

Put twinkle lights around your home year-round. These are not just for winter! Magic has no expiration!

Collect stones, leaves, flowers, shells, sea glass, or whatever other natural item you find joy in. Place them on a windowsill or special shelf in your home.

Light candles at dinner. No matter how unfancy your meal may be.

Have a favorite go-to mug that you know always lifts your spirits. You’ll look forward to the routine of reaching for it every day.

Paint your front door (if you’re able) a color that makes you happy. We recently painted our a sage green and it’s irrational how happy it makes me.

Whimsy In Your Daily Life

Get lost in a cozy game like Animal Crossing or Tiny Bookshop. Cozy videogames bring so much joy into life. They aren’t just for kids. Which brings me to…

Play Super Mario, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, or whatever is a nostalgic video game for you. You will feel like a kid again.

Play Disney music while you clean the house and sing your heart out. This is the ultimate mood-booster.

Listen to epic instrumental playlists as you go about your day to feel like your living in a movie. 90’s playlists always make me feel like I’m living in a You’ve Got Mail-style romcom.

Get excited over little things. For me, I am in complete awe every night when I watch the sunset and this has become a thing my kids associate me with. It makes me so happy.

Color in a grown up coloring book. I have my eye on this one.

Take a walk in the rain instead of shying away. Wear rainboots. Jump in puddles. Bring a colorful umbrella.

Lay on a blanket in your yard or park and read. Or in bed. In the middle of the day. It’s not time wasted. It’s very much the opposite.
