I’ll admit that it took me a second to warm up to cranky villagers, but once I did… never looked back. They are not the same kind of abrasive (and downright mean) personality as they were in previous Animal Crossing games. They have softer edges. Still, yes, cranky, but with a sweet disposition and heart of gold behind it.
I lean towards loving all the cranky wolves (you’ll see) but there are so many gems here. I will also share what their personality Subtype is – A or B. You can read more about what this means here.

20. Gaston
There is just something about this design that is cool enough that he makes the cut. What a ‘stache. What a mood. His favorite colors are brown and orange and he has the education hobby, which he gets bonus points for.

19. Octavian
Octavian is a fan favorite, so I am sorry that he is ranked so low. He is just okay for me, but I do appreciate his design. His favorite colors are black and white and he has the play hobby.

18. Admiral
I love a good bird villager and this one reminds me of a Muppet, so bonus points because I love the Muppets. Admiral is kinda underrated, I think! I like his zen vibe. His favorite colors are black and blue and he has the nature hobby.

17. Ike
Ike has a really unique and rustic design with nice natural coloring, which I always appreciate. I really have a soft spot for the cranky bears. His favorite colors are green and blue and he has the nature hobby.

16. Walt
The kangaroo villagers are often slept on, but Walt is one of the cooler ones. He reminds me of a retired boxer with a lot of sage wisdom and advice to dole out. His favorite colors are black and gray and he has the fitness hobby.

15. Murphy
I always have a soft spot for the cub villagers and Murphy has such a pretty coloring. If you want the luck of the Irish on your island, he is the choice. His catchphrase is “laddie,” and his name is a common Irish surname. His favorite colors are blue and white and he has the education hobby.

14. Static
Static’s design is just plain cool. Love his coloring, love the name. Love a good cranky squirrel… just *chef’s kiss* on this one. His favorite colors are black and yellow and he has the music hobby.

13. Apollo
Just a regal eagle with a simple yet stunning design. Plus a really cool name (which may be in reference to the Apollo space program). He has the music hobby and his favorite color is black. Apollo is an Animal Crossing classic.

12. Lobo
There are quite a few cranky wolves, but Lobo isn’t my first choice. He’s still very cool, but there are better. I do like his golden eyes and his catchphrase “ah-rooooo.” He has the education hobby (points for this!) and his favorite colors are black and beige.

11. Grizzly
A cranky grizzly bear giving all the lumberjack vibes… sold. Oh, and he has my very favorite hobby (education) which is also a big plus. His favorite colors are black and red and his catchphrase is a simple “grrr” which is perfect.

10. Butch
I always love a good dog villager and Butch is no exception. He has great coloring and design and he’s a classic, having been in all the Animal Crossing games. His favorite colors are blue and gray and he has the music hobby.

9. Wart Jr.
Wise zen grandpa toad for the win. Wart Jr. has such a cool zen vibe about him and I think he has a great color. I’d like to have him someday. His favorite colors are blue and purple and he has the education hobby.

8. Buzz
I have a soft spot for some of the eagles and Buzz is one of them. I love his coloring and face card. I think he is severely underrated. His favorite colors are yellow and red and he has the nature hobby.

7. Dobie
Little old man wolf, the sweetest thing you ever did see. Dobie is a fan favorite and I can see why. He is the island grandpa we all want in our lives. He also has a zen vibe to him, which I appreciate. His favorite colors are brown and beige and he has the nature hobby. Cranky old plant man… love.

6. Bruce
The only cranky deer villager in the game, Bruce is such a cool dude. His catchphrase is “gruff” which reminds me of the tale of the Three Billy Goats Gruff, though he isn’t a deer… still love it. His favorite colors are black and red and he has the nature hobby (unexpected and love it!)

5. Gonzo
Gonzo is such a grandpa and I love it so much. He always has some sage wisdom and advice to share. I love his no-nonsense koala design. The perfect coloring! A long time ago in the very first Animal Crossing game, he was in my town and I wasn’t keen on him (too cranky) but he’s since calmed down and now he’s ranking at #4. His favorite colors are green and black and he has the nature hobby.

4. Wolfgang
Okay, now we are getting down to the very best of the cranky wolves. Wolfgang is just too cool. He has the education hobby, which, again, I love this hobby no matter what but it is extra cool when I see the cranky wolves with their reading glasses and a book. Always makes my heart happy. His favorite colors are green and black.

3. Avery
He is just so unhinged and so cool. Love the crazy look in his eye and general vibe so much. Great coloring/patterns, too. His catchphrase is “skree-haw.” Underrated eagle!! His favorite colors are orange and brown and he has the music hobby.

2. Fang
Look. at. this. beautiful. wolf. Fang’s design is pretty flawless. The most sleek! I’ve had him on and off my islands and I always end up missing him and getting him back. His favorite colors are white and aqua and he has the best hobby – education. Fang in his glasses… 10/10.

1. Chief
Oh, he’s a wolf villager but look at this design. The coolest fox in all the lands. I am pretty much obsessed with Chief and will never let him go. His coloring, his dialogue, his swagger… just the best of the best. Plus, he is apparently the alpha due to his name. We love an alpha wolf. His favorite colors are white and gray and he has the music hobby. Chief singing on the island = perfection. Chief existing on the island and looking pensive at all times = perfection. He is perfection.
