As a parent, it is so much fun to think about the traditions and memories that you’ll make as your family continues to grow. Even the smallest traditions often become the memories that your child will hold onto forever (and maybe even continue on with their own family).
From holiday magic to thunderstorm forts, here are simple traditions that help create lasting childhood memories.

Simple & Cozy Everyday Traditions
Pancakes on Sundays. We have been doing this since the beginning. Pancakes on a Sunday is not only delicious, but a beautiful way to enjoy breakfast together at least once a week. That often gets lost sometimes in the hustle of the morning rush before school during the week.
Weekend strolls. Even if that means a quick walk around town to grab coffee or a walk in the neighborhood. Fresh air always does wonders.
Movie + homemade pizza night. Let the kids pick the movie (go to the library for a free option!) Popcorn, snacks, candy, pizza for dinner… piles of blankets and pillows and cuddles.
Thunderstorm fun. Growing up, we loved a good thunderstorm because our parents made it fun. Flashlights, tents, candles, counting between lightning and thunder… we weren’t scared because we had something to look forward to. Sometimes we simply open the windows and watch and listen. This is an underrated and easily memory-maker.
Seasonal books. I always fill our basket with seasonal books from the library. I love this so much, I wrote a whole post with seasonal book choices. Or you may want to start your own personal libary and buy new or you could grab books at a local thrift spot (my favorite way to save money). You’ll soon have a library of fun and seasonally appropriate books to read together as your kid(s) grow up. So much fun and something to look forward to each and every month.
Seasonal Traditions To Look Forward To
Birthday wake-up. After my child falls asleep on the night before their birthday, I add streamers to their doorframe and balloons and a banner in our living room. It’s such a simple thing but it makes them feel special as soon as they pass through their bedroom door.
Pick your own food. Strawberries, blueberries, apples, peaches, pumpkins… whatever it is, we’re picking it. I actually worked at a pick-your-own booth in high school. That’s how much I enjoy pick-your-own! We’re a family of gatherers. Find what’s local to you and put it on the calendar! Make sure you bake something yummy after (include your kids if they want to help!)
Pumpkin picking and carving. This is an autumn staple, right? Visit a local pumpkin patch and spend the night carving spooky or silly faces.
Advent calendar. This has become our #1 tradition as a family. Even as my kids get older, they still appreciate it and look forward to this. Here’s my Advent calendar guide.
Christmas cookie day. My siblings and I grew up with a Christmas cookie day tradition and I am 100% continuing with our family. You literally wear your pajamas and just bake tons and tons of cookies all day long. Another day we all look forward to. Here are our favorite cookies to make.
Family Traditions That Create Lasting Memories
Summer vacations. It doesn’t have to be far – road trips are honestly the very best for this. Even 1-2 days in a new place to explore new places, food, and events is a way to make instant and long-lasting family memories.
