How and Why We Use Tote Boxes for Homeschool Organization

Hi friends!

When I shared our new curriculum tote system on Instagram, a few of you were interested in seeing what’s inside and how I organize it all. This post is for you! I am 100% hoping we can use this system for a very long time… as long as everything fits in our boxes, anyways.

I was previously using these tote bins from the Container Store to organize our curriculum. It worked well with one child, but I wanted to condense everything so that I could use one bin per child now that I have Fiona coming up on preschool. She is so eager to do everything like her big sister and was very excited to have her own tote (even though there isn’t much in it yet, haha).

There’s a lot to love about these bins…

  • They are affordable at $19.99 (at the time I purchased them).
  • Everything we need for reading, writing, and math fits into them (I do keep instructor’s manuals separate – I’ll share a photo below for reference).
  • The divider organizer on top is perfect for manipulatives/extras that we regularly use during lessons. This helps me from running around and gathering supplies from all different corners of the house.
  • The handle makes it perfect to carry around on the go. We hardly ever do school in the same spot. Sometime it is the floor, couch, table, or outside. With everything in one place, it is easy!
  • They are very sturdy, durable, and of good quality.

Both bins fit nicely in our little homeschool cabinet, next to the dining room table/kitchen. This set up is really working for us.

So, let’s get into what fits in the bin. This is for my kindergartner. Here’s what’s inside:

In top divider: dry erase markets, highlighter, pencil, tape, reading highlighter, blank notecards, math notecards, mini clock, pattern blocks.

In the bin itself: AAR components/activity sheets/games, AAR readers, AAR word card box, handwriting workbook, math workbook, math ten frames, math manipulatives box (found the plastic organizer at Dollar Tree).

A note on AAR activity sheets: I keep a large binder in the cabinet with the activities already cut and prepped and pull out what we will need for the next few lessons and put into her bin. There is just way too many to fit all at once. But this takes no time at all.

So all of this above fits nicely into the bin like this:

So there you have it! Easy organization that you can take wherever need be. I hope this brought some inspiration for your own setup. Thanks for reading. x
