Choosing a Name: Our Favorites

Choosing a Name: Our Favorites

Hi friends! I think everyone here knows how obsessed with names I am by now (based on, you know, all the name posts). But when it actually comes time to name your really-truly-on-the-way baby… Joe and I bumped heads a bit. Names that I thought I loved suddenly didn’t feel right, and vice versa. It took us a little bit, but I think we finally have a strong first and middle contender. Her name is being used in our home and we’re getting used to calling it/saying it/singing it/the whole nine. We decided that we’re going to keep her moniker a secret from the online world until she’s born, but I thought I’d share our working list! These are some of the names we tossed around (and most of the time, did not agree on) but hey. They’re all gorgeous!

Any guesses on what we’re naming her? ;)

4 Maca Smoothies for Fertility

4 Maca Smoothies for Fertility

I’m always making a fuss about maca root on here, but I promise it is with good reason. Maca is an ancient herb and root vegetable that provides many benefits to women’s health (and men’s!) Most notably, it may boost libido (improving sexual health) and promote fertility.

NOTE: I am not a doctor or scientist or anything remotely similar. I made the decision to take maca myself based on online research and studies I have read. You should not take this as advice, but inspiration. Visit your own doctor if you are wondering if maca is something you should try.

Flora Fauna Baby Name Ideas

Flora and Fauna Baby Names

These are my favorite kind of names – names that you find in the natural world. I can remember being in elementary school science class as my teacher discussed flora and fauna. I remember thinking then that I loved the way “flora and fauna” rolled off the tongue. It always stuck with me for some reason, and now here I am writing a blog post with the phrase in the title.

For those of you who may not know, flora means plant life and fauna means animal life. These are two of my favorite things, right? Combine that with baby names and here’s a list that makes my heart siiiing (and very appropriate for the start of summer!) If any of you share the name obsession with me, I hope that you enjoy what I’ve put together. These names are sweet and quirky – perfect for any mama birds out there looking for boho/earthy names inspired by nature.

A Guide to Vegan Nutrition During Pregnancy

GUIDE: Vegan Nutrition During Pregnancy

Throughout this pregnancy, a lot of people have had the same concern and question: Do you eat meat or dairy now? The short answer is “nope!”

To elaborate a bit… I know that there are a lot of scary/weird articles out there that make a plant-based diet seem inadequate in the nutrients department. And of course, growing a healthy baby really comes down to getting all the proper nutrition into your diet – from protein to folate and beyond. The thing is… there are a ton of vegan options for every nutrient category and if you are a balanced and mindful eater, there really isn’t an issue. A healthy and whole vegan diet paired with a prenatal vitamin or two is enough.

The funniest thing to me is the fact that doctors actually have to warn you about animal-based products. I remember during my first prenatal visit at 8 weeks, the medical assistant was reviewing a ton of information with me, from tests to diet. She warned me against eating too much red/undercooked meat, seafood/sushi, soft cheese, deli meat, raw eggs, etc. I quickly let her know that it really wouldn’t be an issue since I eat a plant-based diet and she exclaimed “ME TOO!” and gushed about her own plant-based pregnancy experience. The only warnings I received about plant-based foods were mostly: no raw sprouts or anything that could have bacteria, be careful with hummus and unpasteurized products, no licorice root. (There may be more, but this is the advice I received.)

So, no, I haven’t strayed from my usual diet. This is my lifestyle now and it is what I feel most comfortable putting into my body. Today I wanted to share a quick guide on vegan foods that will help you meet pregnancy nutrient requirements. Yes, protein is doable. Yes, calcium is doable. Yes, it is all doable. Take a look at each header and see just how many options you have available to you. There are even a few recipes, too.

Money-Saving Tips to Prepare for Baby

How We’re Saving Money Before Baby

Ever since I can remember, I have always been a saver. I owe that all to my parents. They were both very clear about saving money and helped get me started when I was as young as maybe 10 or 12 years old. I got my first job when I was 13 and yes, I loved spending money on clothes and make-up and jewelry and movies and CDs like any other teen girl, but I was always equally as conscious about checking my balances and managing my checkbook. Yes, I still to this day use a checkbook, haha! My husband laughs at me and thinks I am crazy but whatever… I am old school like that and and it really helps keep me on track.

Needless to say, my money-saving and budgeting habits began to rub off on Joe (thankfully) and we’ve be even more conscious lately with baby girl on the way.

There are some days when I say to myself “oh we totally got this, it’s all gonna be great” and then some days when I wake up frazzled and freaking out over saving more more more. Life is going to drastically change and money will be tighter than ever – there is no doubt in my mind – but I am trying my best to focus on the good and know that everything will work out. We will find a way to make things work. We have to!

In an effort to save more money before September, I’ve been a lot more conscious of what we are buying, how we are buying, and non-essentials we can forgo. Whether you are also preparing for a major life change (that will affect your budget) or want to just save a little more, I hope some of these tips inspire you. These are just some of the personal ways we are saving here and there. Nothing too crazy, just things that have been working for us.

11 Baby Items to Buy While Thrifting

11 Baby Items to Buy While Thrifting

Another thrifting post! I can’t stop myself. A little over a month ago, there was a huuuuge consignment sale just 7 minutes from us. I found out that this happens twice a year (April and September) and it’s basically my new favorite thing to look forward to. Everything from clothes to toys to gear… on and on and on. I’ll admit – some things are questionable. I’m a cautious thrifter and only gravitate towards certain items (things that can be easily washed). But I made out well, and I’ll be visiting twice every year from here on out!

The volunteers were so sweet and the atmosphere was pleasant… prices low, clothes clean, and everything was just clean in general. I was so impressed.

And as usual the best part – save a little money, recycle beautiful items that have been gently used, and donate when you are done. I love it.

So, here are some of the items I recommend grabbing. These items are easy to wash, sterilize, and make your own. Once you do that, you’ll breathe new life into them and will forget you even bought secondhand!

The Friendly Fig Nursery Mood Board

Nursery Mood Board

Slowly but surely, we are chipping away at the nursery. This is probably what I have been looking the most forward to – I love decorating/redecorating in general, so a fresh new space to be filled is a dream. It’s hard to imagine what it will look like when half the furniture isn’t in yet and I’ve been just picking up pieces here and there that stick out to me. So, I thought it would be fun (and helpful for me) to lay out some of the items we’ve gotten so far and some that we will be getting. I’m a visual person and happen to love mood boards in general.

People keep asking what the nursery theme is and honestly… I am not quite sure! I usually say it’s just a bright and airy space. Think wildflowers, fruits, pops of color, and animals of all kinds. I initially was thinking a jungle theme, but I love all animals and want to include any and all! As you can see – we got a sweet bunny, cat, AND white tiger above. I’m serious when I say any and all animals. Love.

So really, it is just going to be an eclectic/bohemian/natural type style. As long as it is bright, sunny, and colorful, I am happy.

So here is a look at what we’ve got going on so far.
