Introducing Spices and Herbs to Willow

Introducing Spices and Herbs to Baby

The world of spices and herbs has been a fun one! Now that Willow has honestly tried most fruits and vegetables that we have on hand typically, I have been playing around with new combinations and flavors.

Willow has loved almost anything I’ve been throwing at her – she isn’t fussy at all. If you’ve been following me on IG, you’ll also know that we have started finger foods, and she’s been doing so great with it. I’m having so much fun introducing her to new things. So much plant-based goodness to offer her!

I waited until about 7 months for most of these (except cinnamon, which I introduced around 5 months and rosemary, around 6). The only one on my list that I have heard to watch out for is curry, because it is a blend of a few spices. I just watched out for any rash or issues that day. It checked out!

Here are just a few of the combinations that we’ve experimented with for inspiration.

Introducing Spices and Herbs to Baby
Here we have sweet potato and curry, carrots and ginger, and zucchini and garlic powder.

Just a note: I am not a doctor (obviously!) Always speak with your child’s pediatrician about when you can start with these… I got the go-ahead from mine.

FAVORITE SPICE & HERB COMBOS (so far!)

  • Rosemary: white beans, lentils
  • Dill: white potato
  • Garlic powder: zucchini, summer squash
  • Cinnamon: apples, pears, banana, sweet potato, oatmeal
  • Nutmeg: sweet potato, apples, oatmeal
  • Curry: sweet potato, carrots, and white potato
  • Ginger: carrots, apples, and sweet potato
  • Turmeric: lentils, white potato

We have only done a handful so far, but we will keep going. She seems to be happy with almost anything I put in front of her, and has taken very well to the spices above. She really loves the lentils and rosemary, anything with cinnamon, and the carrot ginger. The ginger adds a bit of a kick. She also really loves white potatoes with pretty much anything. Who doesn’t? Girl, wait until you try a french fry.

I’d like to tackle basil and oregano next… and possibly lemon zest. I think lemon zest would be such a great addition to her morning oatmeal. Maybe with some blueberries!

Speaking of, if you want to hear more about her favorite oatmeal combinations, you can see that here.

I hope this inspires you to try something new with your babe once you begin solids/purées. It’s just as much fun for you as it is for baby’s taste buds, trust me. xx bianca

  1. Good to know! I am still introducing new spices to my baby boy but I will have to try these out. Thanks!

    1. You’re welcome! Hope he enjoys. xo

  2. Great ideas, B! I’ll be trying these :) Just this morning I made a broccoli, spinach, potato, and fresh basil puree so my fingers are crossed that it goes over well!

I also made a blueberry, apple, spinach, and beet mix to try out this week but didn’t add any spices to it. I bet ginger would be good with it.

    1. Meg! I’m so glad you like some of these ideas. Those both sound SO GOOD! I am sure Miss Florence will love. Let me know if you give the ginger a try. xo
