Relaxed Homeschooling in the Winter

Relaxed Homeschooling in the Winter

The winter days can feel long and monotonous after the whirlwind of holiday season. And if you have been here a while, you know that I get into a winter slump and often struggle with some seasonal depression. But as always, I am determined to embrace the slowness of the season and take this time to relax, recharge, and reset before spring comes.

We took a nice break from homeschool to soak up all the holiday magic but now we are getting back into our rhythm again. I thought I’d share what we are going to be doing to keep things moving in a relaxed way. The winter can be as enchanting as you make it. Here’s what we are going to fill our days with.

Baking all the delicious treats. Muffins, scones, butternut squash & chocolate chip loaf, apple cake… you name it. Winter is my favorite time to bake and I am looking forward to getting the girls involved.

Building with legos/blocks/magnatiles. My girls both love to build and this is one activity I truly do enjoy playing with them.

Reading by the fire. There will be many library trips and that means reading by candlelight or fireplace. Dreamy. We’re always reading throughout the year but now more than ever.

Hot chocolate & art projects. Whether we are using watercolors or playing with play-doh or making paper snowflakes, it will be better with hot chocolate and vegan marshmallows.

Wintery nature studies. We are going to be learning about all things winter in the next few months… think snow, snowflakes, arctic animals, cold habitats, hibernation. All fun topics and we’ll be reading stories surrounding these themes.

Blankets & educational shows/documentaries. Let’s get cozy on the couch with all the blankets, pillows, and forts and watch some TV. I’ll be finding some educational shows and documentaries surrounding the above themes.

Board games. Willow is at the perfect age to get into board games and actually be able to sit still and follow instructions. I am SO EXCITED to play all the games because we were gifted many over the holidays. With more indoor time on our hands, there will be a whole lot more of this. Fiona has even joined in!

Indoor pod & play dates. I like to plan at least one play date at our house a week with our friends and there will be lots of that to fill our days. Good for kids AND me! We also have a homeschool pod with our best friends and that is going strong.

Snow days. If there is snow outside, we will be in it. Getting kids in and out of snow gear is not fun but once you do it and get out there, you won’t regret it.

Twinkly lights and candles. Even with the holidays gone, we are keeping up all the twinkle lights and lighting scented candles daily. They add a bit of whimsy, magic, and calm into each day.

Pajamas, sweats, fuzzy socks, and blankets. Being cozy makes the days that much more comfortable. Since we aren’t as out and about as usual, now is the time to take full advantage.
