Meals prepared piping hot, with love, and with compassion. It doesn’t sound more hygge than that.
The below are a wide variety of comforting meals that can be enjoyed in contemplative solitude or with close-knit family and friends. Even better, you could have some helping hands in the kitchen and make a whole event out of it. Whatever the case may be for you, I feel that these meals embody all things warm and cozy. I hope that you agree.
Breakfast
Warm Berry Oats
There’s nothing more inviting first thing in the morning than a warm bowl of oats with sweet, gooey, cozy toppings. This is one of my favorite combinations – stewed berries and almond butter. Simple to make but tastes much more elegant than regular berries. Enjoy alone or with loved ones.
Sweet Potato Bowl
Embrace all the fall/winter produce and your taste buds will thank you. Sweet potatoes can be the star of any meal, including breakfast. This creamy bowl is just what your sweet tooth ordered.
Warm Cashew Cream & Fig Toast
Creamy cashew spread and caramelized figs – what’s not to love? It’s warm and syrupy sweet. This recipe calls for local honey, but to veganize simply use maple syrup. A great addition to your brunch spread.
Pomegranate Scones
Pomegranates – autumn and winter’s gem. When in season, they are juicy and bursting with sweetness. Add them to your scones for an unexpected bite. Make a batch with friends, bring to brunch, or bake alone and box up a few for loved ones. It’s a gesture they won’t forget.
Cinnamon Apple Oats
There’s nothing quite as comforting as warming spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg stewed with apples. The perfect cold-weather topping for your bowl of oatmeal.
Lunch/Dinners
Easy Baked Cashew Cheese Pasta
Creamy, dreamy pasta with a bit of a crunch. This is a family favorite for your dinner table.
Lentil Stew
Soups and stews are as hygge as it gets. This lentil stew is made of simple ingredients but allow to simmer for a while and enjoy the aroma that fills your home. Serve with a nice chunk of crusty bread and sink into cozy bliss.
Mushrooms, Lentil, and Barley Stew
When you put together three warm and cozy ingredients, you get a hygge-inspired meal that will warm your belly and heart. This mushroom, lentil, and barley stew is very much comfort food on a cold winter’s day.
Creamy Vegetable & Rice Soup
Hearty and filling with the mushrooms and lentils, this soup is a dream on a cold, snowy day. Serve with crusty bread for a little extra extra.
Bean and Cheese Enchiladas
These come together quickly and are ooey gooey inside. Serve alongside fluffy rice and top with cashew cream and avocado. Perfect.
Spaghetti with Italian Gravy
Hygge may be a Danish word, but an Italian gravy is as hygge as it gets. It simmers on the stove for hours and has a lot of love put into it. And to top it off, it is best enjoyed around a table of your closest loved ones. Break bread and enjoy some wine while you savor the rich flavor of an Italian gravy over spaghetti or your choice pasta. Vegan meatballs or sausage are great additions, too.
Roasted Cauliflower Mac & Cheese
Taking vegan mac and cheese to the next level. The roasted cauliflower adds a beautiful depth of flavor and transforms this “kid’s meal” into an adult favorite. Serve at your next dinner party and watch everyone’s faces light up at the unexpected twist.
Warm Artichoke Dip
Host a game night with your closest friends and family and serve this as an appetizer. It’s decadent, indulgent, and gooey. Serve with chunks of crusty bread or your favorite crackers. It will be the star of the night.
Lasagna Soup
Lasagna is always hygge, but lasagna soup is a quicker way to enjoy it (which is appreciated some days!) If you are in a pinch, this comes together quickly and warms up bellies.
Coconut Cashew Curry
With a coconut cream base, you can’t go wrong. This creamy cashew curry is gorgeous in color and flavor. The perfect pop of color for a gloomy gray day.
Cream of Mushroom Pasta
Cream and carbs are a winter night’s dream. This is great alone or in a group setting.
Bean & Tempeh Chili
Chili is just as good when it’s vegan – just sub the meat for tempeh and add all the beans your heart desires. This one has a nice kick and pairs beautifully with some creamy avocado. If you have vegan sour cream on hand or cheese shreds, you have yourself quite a comforting meal. Great for large groups, too. Chili by candlelight sounds wonderful, right?
Freekeh Soup
This ancient grain doesn’t get the love that it deserves. Make it the star of your soup and open your friends’ and family’s eyes to its nutty flavor and wonder at your next dinner party. With a flavorful and savory broth, hearty chickpeas, and seasonal veggies, you can’t go wrong.
Vegan Chik’n Alfredo Pizza
Up your usual pizza recipe with this vegan chik’n alfredo pizza. It is hearty, creamy, and surprising. Alfredo + pizza = comfort food on top of comfort food.
Broccoli Cheddar Soup
An easy way to get some extra veggies into the whole family. This broccoli cheddar soup would be extra special in a bread boule.
Italian Wedding Soup
Made with vegan meatballs, this is a classic comfort for me personally. My mother made it very often when I was a child. It’s filling and unbelievably delicious with crusty bread to dunk.
Sweets
Oat Chocolate Chip Cookies
Made with oat flour, these cookies have a bit of nuttiness to them. It works beautifully with the chocolate. My go-to cookie recipe!
Apple Crisp
For that extra layer of hygge, bundle up and go apple picking with loved ones earlier in the day before making this sweet apple crisp. The results are always sweeter when you put some labor and love into a dish.
Butternut Squash & Chocolate Chip Loaf
Butternut squash may be enjoyed savory for most, but it is even better when baked into sweets. This loaf is spiced wonderfully and the chocolate chips are a nice touch. Enjoy for brunch or an after-dinner treat. It’s always a group favorite, too. Alternatively, this oat pumpkin chocolate chip loaf is also to die for.
Cinnamon Buns
Wake up and be happy. With these cinnamon buns filling your home with aroma, a bad mood is impossible. Make a batch for your kiddos and watch their faces light up. These are also a great idea if you are hosting a brunch. Everyone will be reaching for one.
Apple Cider Donuts
Cakey and sweet, these apple cider donuts pair beautifully with your morning cup of coffee.
Drinks
Creamy Mocha Latte
Sweet, warm, and invigorating. A mocha latte in your favorite mug while bundled up on the back porch first thing in the morning… it’s an experience, to say the least. Sit and reflect while you breathe in the crisp air.
Turmeric Latte
Take your latte to the next level with the addition of turmeric. It’s an unexpected twist to a classic.
Golden Milk
A bold, golden color for an overcast day. If you are not a fan of coffee or caffeine, this is a great option for you.
Turmeric Broth
Combat sickness while sipping on savory. Broth can very much be enjoyed in a mug on a cold day.
